A language study trip to experience a celebration that dates back nearly 170 years

A public holiday in Canada, Victoria Day is celebrated every year on the Monday preceding May 24—so in 2013, that’s today! Why this date? Because it marks the day when the famous Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom made her first steps into history. Wishing to honor the sovereign born in 1819, the Legislature of the Province of Canada declared that date a public holiday eight years later, in 1845.

A celebration that lives on after the queen

Following the proclamation of the Canadian Confederation in 1867—the year the Dominion of Canada was formed as a self-governing state within the British Empire—and long after Queen Victoria’s death, the country continues to celebrate the sovereign’s birthday.
