A Summary of the "One Teacher, One Student" Program

  2. 2 to 5 hours of lessons per day (your choice, depending on your chosen destination and itinerary)
  3. 1 or 2 students per teacher (your choice for stays with guided tours; 1 French student per family for stays with independent travel)
  4. Guided tours departing from nearly 30 cities (depending on your destination), or independent travel

Highlights of the trip

  • Enjoy both private lessons and a homestay experience
  • Make rapid progress in English, German, or Spanish throughpersonalized instruction

On a "one-on-one" program, the student enjoys full immersion in a host family and receives private lessons from a family member who is a certified teacher. Students can thus improve their proficiency in the language of their chosen country through 2, 3, 4, or 5 hours of daily private lessons from Monday through Friday (depending on the location and trip selected). Staying with a teacher is an ideal way to make rapid progress in both written and spoken language skills.

Choose between: 1 or 2 participants per family (depending on the location)

On a guided tour of England, participants can choose to be the only French speaker in their host family or to be placed with another French person ( who could, of course, be a friend or relative) with whom they will attend classes. This latter option will make it easier for them to adjust to their new environment.

In the U.S., Canada, Spain, Germany, England, Ireland, and Malta, when traveling independently, the young person must be the only French person in their host family.

One or two French speakers per family? LEC has some advice

This question is key to making the most of your child’s stay, and the answer depends mainlyontheir motivation to goand their personality.

Our experience has led us to the following conclusion:

  • If your child is truly independent and motivated, and has already acquired a solid foundation in the language of the chosen country, they may be placed as the only French speaker in their host family.
  • However, if this is your child’s first or even second stay, or if they are not yet comfortable enough with the language, we recommend pairing them with another French-speaking child. The reassuring presence of a companion—who could, of course, be one of their friends (or a parent)—will help your child feel more secure and thus support their language learning.
