Today, Sunday, May 3, 2015, marks the start of the famous Toronto Marathon, a sporting tradition that you might have the chance to witness if you happen to be on a language study trip in Canada with LEC…Here’s what you need to know about this event.

A marathon in the heart of Ontario’s capital

The Toronto Marathon takes place, as the name suggests… in Toronto. As the capital of Ontario, it’s an international metropolis where life is good. LEC made the right choice, since you’ll arrive at its airport for a language study trip to Canada with our organization.

Kickoff at Queen’s Park

Every year, more than 2,500 participants from all over the world take on the race’s 40-kilometer course. The marathon starts at Queen’s Park, a historic downtown park that is home to the Ontario Legislative Assembly and the provincial government.

The record for men and women

Eagerly anticipated by many locals, athletes, and tourists, this spring event also features a half-marathon anda 5-kilometer race. Currently, the record for the Toronto Marathon is held by Damaoui El Mostafa of Morocco, originally from Rabat: in 2000, he completed it in 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 17 seconds. On the women’s side, the title belongs to Olga Kovpotina, a Ukrainian who, in 2004, completed the distance in 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 47 seconds.
