Did you make some British friends during your last language study trip to England or Scotland? Rejoice for them, because tomorrow is a holiday!
This is what our friends across the Channel call the Spring Bank Holiday—a name that, as LEC points out, translates very literally to “Spring Bank Holiday.” It’s a chance for our organization to take a look at the traditions surrounding this public holiday in the United Kingdom.
When is the Spring Bank Holiday?
First thing to remember: the other name for the Spring Bank Holiday. In Great Britain, it’s also called the Late May Bank Holiday —the name says it all: it’s indeed a holiday that falls at the end of May.
Much like Memorial Day in the United States, which LEC will discuss tomorrow, the Spring Bank Holiday is celebrated every year on the last Monday in May—previously, it was celebrated on the Monday following Pentecost.
A language study trip all about relaxing—but only for one day!
A language study trip to England might be the perfect opportunity to discover the customs of the locals, who take advantage of this holiday to spend a day away from work or school. Gardening, family gatherings, and even a weekend in Paris—for the luckiest Brits—are all on the agenda during this long spring weekend.
Discover amazing village festivals during your language study trip
Parts of Great Britain also come alive with celebrations tied to the Spring Bank Holiday. So, if you’re lucky enough to be on a language study trip on the last Monday in May, you might find yourself at village gatherings where the festivities are in full swing and the entertainment is sure to amaze you!
