It’s hard to think of anything more iconic than fish and chips when it comes to British cuisine! Since you’re likely to eat it if you’ve chosen a language study program in England with a host family, LEC takes a moment to highlight this famous dish, beloved by our friends across the Channel.
A language study trip to England for some fish and chips—to eat there or take out!
Literally, fish and chips means “fish and fries”; that’s a good summary of what you’ll find on your plate when you order this dish at the nearest pub or restaurant! To eat in or take out (and definitely try during your language study trip to England, London, or elsewhere!), this main course consists of fish fried in batter or breadcrumbs, served with fries and possibly green vegetables, such as peas, for example.
Fish and chips: a dish that travels the world
The choice of fish depends on mood, availability, and cultural preferences. During a language study trip to England, you’ll find that the British opt for cod and haddock. But in the Southern Hemisphere, where fish and chips are also very popular, people are happy to enjoy some barramundi—as is the case in Australia —or snapper, as in New Zealand.
Fish and chips vs. hamburger
One last tip: if fish and chips really aren’t your thing, make up for it with a hamburger during your language study trip to the U.S.!
