A language study trip near Portsmouth to follow in the writer’s footsteps

The man who would go on to become one of the most famous English authors of the 20th century was born in 1865 in Bombay, shortly after his parents had arrived in what was still, at the time, a British colony.

At the age of six, the young man, as was the custom, left his homeland to returnto England: from then on, he was educated in Portsmouth, in the countyof Hampshire (one of the destinations LEC offers for language study abroad in England).

Kipling, the youngest Nobel Prize winner in Literature

Returning to India at the age of 17, the young man became a journalist in Lahore, then in Allahabad, before returning once again toEngland. Author of memorable short stories, such as “The Man Who Would Be King” in 1888, and novels no less memorable, such as “Kim” in 1901, he left a lasting impression through his gift for storytelling, which broke with the conventions of the time. So much so that he became the first English-language author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature —and the youngest!—in 1907, at just 42 years old.

A piece of prose celebrating British imperialism

But Rudyard Kipling was also an exceptional writer in the service of British imperialismGeorge Orwell even went so far as to call him the “prophet of British imperialism.” It was only toward the end of his life that the harshness of his nationalism began to soften, as seen in his Travel Letters in 1920 and his Tales of Land and Sea in 1923.
