Alongside London, Liverpool is undoubtedly one of the most legendary cities in the entire United Kingdom. It is this city that LEC has chosen to tell you about today, in anticipation of your upcoming teen language study trip to England with us. Let’s take a closer look.
Where is Liverpool?
Liverpool is a port city in Great Britain located on the right bank of the Mersey Estuary. It lies a few kilometers north of Oswestry, a town you may have the opportunity to explore during an upcoming language study trip to England for teenagers. The city has established prestigious sister-city relationships with:
- Dublin, Ireland
- Shanghai, China
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Cologne, Germany
The face of Liverpool since its renovation and development program
Founded in the early 13th century, Liverpool emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries as Britain’s second-largest port and the world’s leading cotton port: colonial goods and industrial products from northern England passed through its docks. After the city’s decline in the 20th century, a major renovation and development program was launched in 1995. The result: large-scale urban planning initiatives, combined with government efforts, have significantly transformed the face of Liverpool!
The city’s working port, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Tudor-style buildings, Georgian-style houses, and more: Liverpool stands out for its architectural and cultural diversity. And there’s plenty of evidence to prove it! First, UNESCO has listed the city’s merchant port as a World Heritage Site. Second, in 2008, Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of examples!
