Ready for a teen language trip to England with LEC? If you’re lucky enough to get up close and personal with Queen Elizabeth II by choosing a stay in London, you could also get a taste of royal life by visiting Windsor Castle…Here’s what you need to know about this legendary site.
Windsor, a city built on the Thames
Let’s start by locating Windsor, the town where the castle of the same name was built. The town, which is twinned with Neuilly-sur-Seine, lies on the Thames, about 40 kilometers from the British capital. It is located in Berkshire, a county bordered by Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Greater London.
A building with stunning architecture
Windsor Castle—which you’ll refer to as Windsor Castle during your teen language study trip to England —stands in the heart of the city. It owes its fame primarily to its unique architecture, which includes, among other things:
- a round tower
- an upper ward
- a horseshoe cloister
Although construction of the building began as early as the 11th century, it has undergone many improvements over the centuries.
A truly regal residence
But Windsor Castle owes its fame above all to the fact that it is one of the British royal family’s most famous residences, alongside Buckingham Palace. It is both the largest castle and the oldest inhabited fortress in the world. The State Apartments are decorated with meticulous care and to the highest standards —they feature works by:
- Rembrandt
- Rubens
- Canaletto
- Gainsborough
Can you tour Windsor Castle?
