What is the Heptarchy?

TheHeptarchy literally means Seven Kingdoms. In fact, it is the name given to the seven kingdoms founded by the Anglo-Saxons on the island of Britain during the Early Middle Ages, one of the three main periods of the Middle Ages along with the High Middle Ages and the Late Middle Ages.

The Seven Kingdoms of the Heptarchy

Among the seven kingdoms that made upthe Heptarchy are several counties where you might have the opportunity to spend your language study trip in England.The Heptarchy consisted of:

  • of Wessex
  • fromEssex
  • from Sussex
  • of Northumbria
  • from East Anglia
  • from Kent
  • de la Mercie

The End of the Heptarchy

It was not until the 10th century thatthe Heptarchy gave way to a single state, known as the Kingdom of England. Athelstan is considered one of the architects of this unification and reigned over the new kingdom from 924 until his death in 939.
