It’s hard—if not impossible—to find a more central location than Westminster: this is the famous neighborhood you’ll pass through if you decide to venture into the very heart of the British capital during a language study trip to London with LEC! To mark the occasion, our organization would like to tell you a little more about it.
A densely populated area of the British capital
Westminster—as you’ll need to call it during your language study trip to London—is one of the most famous boroughs in the capital of the United Kingdom. Situated on the left bank of the Thames, it is centered around the famous Westminster Abbey, founded around the year 960. In 2013, the borough alone had a population of 226,841. By way of comparison, that’s almost as many as the city of Lille alone, on this side of the Channel.
A London neighborhood that is home to many others…
When we talk about the Westminster neighborhood, we’re referring, by extension, to the City of Westminster —or, in Shakespeare’s language, the City of Westminster. Within its boundaries lie some of the city’s most famous areas, including:
- Covent Garden
- Fitzrovia
- Holborn
- Little Venice
- Mayfair
- Marylebone
- Paddington
- Pimlico
- Soho
What should you see in Westminster during your stay?
The City of Westminster is home to several sites and landmarks of great interest that are well worth a visit, if you have the chance during your stay. We’ve already mentioned Westminster Abbey above; but how could we fail to mention the Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarchs? You’ll also want to take in the view of the magnificent Palace of Westminster, where the House of Commons and the House of Lords of the United Kingdom sit. Finally, Westminster Cathedral is also well worth a visit!
