Have you heard of Oswestry? As part of your language study trip to England with our organization, the LEC teams will make a short stop in this British town!
A town less than 10 minutes from the England-Wales border
When you think of Oswestry, the first thing that comes to mind is a language study trip to England…but it also brings to mind the Country Wales. Indeed, it’s hard to find an English town closer to that part of the United Kingdom known as Wales. It belongs to the English county of Shropshire, in the western part of the West Midlands region. This county borders Country : Oswestry is only about a ten-minute drive from Rhydycroesau (a Welsh town on the English border)!
Oswestry or Croesoswallt?
Oswestry, which our Welsh friends have named Croesoswallt, is home to about 17,000 residents. Before becoming the town we know today, this English town has had a rich history spanning centuries—even millennia.
The spectacular site of Old Oswestry
Prehistorian researchers trace Oswestry’s history back to 800 B.C.:just outside the town, these experts have unearthed Old Oswestry, a spectacular site that has revealed numerous traces of regional life during the Iron Age. The nickname for this one-of-a-kind area? The Stonehenge of the Iron Age —nothing less!
From the English Civil War to the 21st Century
Centuries later, Oswestry would come under the influence of the Anglo-Saxon kings, experience the English Civil War (as we’d call it during a language study trip to England), and endure the hardships of both world wars. A rich, powerful history that has helped shape the identity of this small… but resilient town. Passing through the area? Be sure to visit Whittington Castle, a must-see landmark in the region!
