You have chosen a language study trip to Germany with LEC? Between Hanover and Göttingen lies a city where, with our organization, you’ll have the chance to practice the language of Goethe while discovering the culture of our friends across the Rhine. Its name? Hildesheim. And here’s a closer look.
A city in one of Germany's largest states
Hildesheim is located in Lower Saxony, the second-largest state in Germany, just behind Bavaria. Along withHanover and Göttingen, mentioned above, as well asOldenburg and Wolfsburg, among the 10 most populous cities in the region. In 2012, the city had a population of 102,584, roughly the same as the French city of Montreuil in the Île-de-France region.
From Saint-Michel Church…
You may have the chance to discover this for yourself during a language study trip to Germany: Hildesheim first captivates visitors with its Romanesque churches. The most famous of them all? St. Michael’s Abbey Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A relic of a bygone era, it was built exactly a thousand years ago, between 1010 and 1020.
… at Sainte-Marie Cathedral
St. Mary’s Cathedral is no exception, as it too has been recognized by the organization. Construction on the original building began in the second half of the 9th century; centuries later, the structure was almost entirely rebuilt in its original Romanesque style.
A history that spans the ages
From centuries-old monuments to historic houses, choosing Hildesheim for your language study trip to Germany means immersing yourself in a rich history—both ancient and modern. Indeed, it was in this city that Oskar Schindler, the industrialist honored with the title of Righteous Among the Nations and who inspired Steven Spielberg’s famous film, passed away.
