Originally, BMW consisted of two companies: Rapp Motorenwerke on one side and Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfrabrik on the other. When the two companies merged during World War II, the result was named Bayerische Motoren Werke, or the Bavarian Motor Works. Behind this name, a symbol of Bavarian craftsmanship, lies one of the most famous acronyms: BMW.

At the time, BMW focused its operations on aircraft engines; in fact, that’s where its blue-and-white logo originated. Once the war ended, BMW was barred from continuing in that field, so the company shifted its focus to designing engines for cars, motorcycles, and heavy-duty vehicles. The legend was born.
