For your teen language trip to Germany, LEC offers you the opportunity to stay in cities such as Wolfsburg and Hildesheim, located just a few kilometers from the legendary city of Hanover. It is to this city that our organization has chosen to dedicate its Did you know of the day.
Hanover, the capital of the state of Lower Saxony
Hanover (to be called Hannover during your teen language study trip to Germany) is part of the state of Lower Saxony (or Niedersachsen in the language of Goethe). But the city stands out from Brunswick, Oldenburg, and Göttingen due to its unique status: it is, in fact, the capital of this state, the second-largest region in the country after Bavaria. In 2013, Hanover was home to 514, 137 people, a figure that would place it among the three most populous cities in France, if it were located on our side of the Rhine.
A picturesque town
This city, which joined the Hanseatic League in 1386 and became a princely residence in 1636, captivates tourists and locals alike with its wealth of sights and attractions. A green city, it draws nature lovers and those who appreciate pastoral settings, particularly thanks to its Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, where statues of the finest taste rival the most exquisite fountains.
Other must-see sites during your visit to Hanover
While visiting Hanover, be sure to check out the 15th-century Old Town Hall, as well as the Marktkirche, a church dating back to the 14th century. Fans of modern architecture won’t be disappointed either, as the New Town Hall and the Gehry Tower offer a truly striking sight. Finally, let’s mention the Hanover Opera House, built in the late classical style, as well as the city’s many museums, such as the must-see Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum Hannover.
