When someone mentions the Black Forest, do you immediately think of a delicious chocolate dessert? That’s perfectly normal! But the Black Forest is also (and above all!) a region well known to our friends across the Rhine. During your language trip to Germany, LEC will take you on a little tour there.

The Black Forest, covering nearly 6,000 square kilometers

The Black Forest (or Schwarzwald, as you’ll likely hear it referred to during an upcoming language study trip to Germany) is a mountain range that overlooks the Rhine Valley, opposite the Vosges. The range stretches for nearly 160 kilometers and covers an area of approximately 6,000 square kilometers. Its highest peak is 1,493 meters: the Feldberg.

Thinking of visiting Baden-Württemberg for your language study trip to Germany?

Located in the state of Baden-Württemberg—where you might have the chance to stay during a language study trip to Germany—the Black Forest mountain range is characterized by plateaus dissected into steep, rugged ridges and carved by a few glacial cirques and small troughs. To the west, rivers are often deeply incised into the landscape; to the east, by contrast, the waterways cut only slightly into the plateau, before some of them join the Danube.

In the Black Forest

Deep in the Black Forest, it’s not uncommon to come across hikers—both German and foreign—as well as traditional mountain industries such as woodworking, watchmaking, and textiles. And when the cold weather sets in, winter sports take center stage!
