On the occasion of the recent commemoration of May 8, 1945, as well as Europe Day on May 9, LEC reflects on the relationship between two of the Old Continent’s great powers, whose strong bond continues to fascinate despite the trials of time.

 

A language study trip to Germany to explore the shared history of our two countries

For a young French person, a language study trip to Germany might be an opportunity to discover what really lies behind the term“Franco-German friendship.”From the ECSC Treaty in 1951 to the single currency, via the Élysée Treaty in 1963, the history of this partnership is incredibly rich.

 

While the two countries are currently facing a major challenge—the debate between austerity and economic stimulus— this special relationship between the two sides of the Rhine has been exemplified by a number of legendary “duos.”

So, during his language study trip to Germany, we may have the opportunity to learn a little more about the partnership between Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, who, 50 years ago, formalized bilateral cooperation between their two countries in the areas of defense, international relations, and the economy.

 

During this language study trip, we will also have the opportunity to learn more about the relationship between François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl, symbolized by their legendary handshake on September 22, 1984, near Verdun. Finally, we can explore the ties between Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schröder, those of the“Merkozy”duo, or even the very current relationship between François Hollande and Angela Merkel.
