The son of Hans Holbein the Elder, this German painter is the creator of the painting The Ambassadors, fiercely guarded by the National Gallery in London, as well as a series of portraits that have gone down in history. Among the best known are:

The painter died in London on November 29, 1543, at the height of his fame, during a plague epidemic.
