In the state of Thuringia
Let’s start by locating Weimar. The city is located in the state of Thuringia —which you should refer to as Thüringen during your next language trip to Germany. In terms of population, Weimar is the fourth-largest city in the region, after Erfurt, Gera, and Jena.
A central location
Weimar's rich history
Witha population of around 65,000— roughly the same, by way of comparison, as the city of Quimper in Finistère—Weimar is inextricably linked to the eponymous republic. The Weimar Republic was the name given to Germany’s political system after World War I, from 1919 to 1933. Prior to that, Weimar was the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, and later that of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
What to see in Weimar?
Today, the city of Weimar is a cultural, academic, and tourist hub. Its Gothic and Baroque church, known as the Herderkirche, attracts many tourists, as does its ducal palace, which was rebuilt under the direction of Goethe. During a language study trip to Weimar, Germany, be sure not to miss the Wittum Palace, a Baroque monument, as well as the Schiller and Franz Liszt house-museums, not to mention the Herder Museum!
