In April 2015, the Emerald Isle’s calendar of events will be packed—or it won’t be at all! Between the Connemarathon, the Galway Literary Festival, and the Celtic Media Festival in Derry, many people won’t know which way to turn… At LEC, we’ve made our choice: today, as part of your upcoming language trip to Ireland, we’ve decided to focus on the Belfast Film Festival, whose 2015 edition kicks off today and runs through Saturday, April 25. Lights, camera, action!
A festival founded in the mid-1990s
For ten days, the capital of Northern Ireland —or Ulster, as you may hear it referred to during your next language study trip to Ireland —will come alive with the sounds and melodies of cinema. Founded in the mid-1990s by Irish author, playwright, and screenwriter Laurence McKeown, it is celebrating its 15th edition starting today.
In the New Cinema category, I present…
And for its 15th edition, the program looks promising! Starting with the New Cinema category, which will feature some of the year’s most acclaimed films. Among them are, for example:
- "Timbuktu," a French-Mauritanian film by Abderrahmane Sissako
- Rosewater, an American drama by Jon Stewart
- Phoenix, a German film by Christian Petzold
- Sils Maria, a French feature film by Olivier Assayas
Learn more with the Documentary Panorama section
There will also be a special section dedicated to documentary films. Documentary Panorama explores a wide range of themes, notably through the following films:
- Love and Terror
- Of Men and War
- A City Dreaming
- Approaching the Elephant
