One of the (many) things that New York, Boston, Berlin, London, Chicago, Tokyo, and Dublin ? These cities all host a famous marathon! Today, in anticipation of your next language study trip to Ireland, LEC has chosen to focus on the one winding through the Emerald Isle’s capital city. And why today? Because the starting gun will go off in just a few hours. On your marks, get set… go!
On the podium, Ireland…
The Dublin Marathon, by definition, covers a little over 42 kilometers and challenges both locals and visitors to complete the distance as quickly as possible. The first edition of the race took place in 1980 and saw victories by both an Irishman in the men’s division (Dick Hooper) and an Irishwoman in the women’s division (Carey May). This has since been repeated on several occasions, most notably in the 2013 edition.
… is competing with Great Britain, Kenya, and Russia
Since the race was first held, runners from the UK, Kenya, Russia, and Ukraine have regularly made it onto the podium. The bottom line is that the competition appeals just as much to locals from the Emerald Isle as it does to foreign runners—something you may have the chance to see for yourself during your language study trip to Ireland !
What about the latest edition?
In 2014, two Kenyans won the 32nd Dublin Marathon: Eliud Too in the men’s race, with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 47 seconds, and Esther Macharia in the women’s race, with a time of 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 15 seconds. The suspense remains as to the outcome of the 2015 race!
