You’d think it was a joke—but this is actually a very serious matter! Today, Friday, August 21, marks the kickoff of the 2015 Irish Redhead Convention—in other words… the Irish convention for redheads. During your language study trip to Ireland, LEC is here to give you the details you need to know—regardless of your hair color.

A gathering in Crosshaven

Every year, redheads are invited to gather in the town of Crosshaven. Located in the south of the Emerald Isle, Crosshaven overlooks the sea and lies just a few kilometers southeast of Cork—a city you may have the chance to explore during an upcoming language study trip to Ireland with LEC.

Freckles galore

It is in this small Irish town that redheads are celebrated every year. As the BBC reported immediately after the 2014 event, theIrish Redhead Convention features competitions for the best red eyebrows and the most freckles per square inch. Translation: competitions for the best red eyebrows and the most freckles per square inch!

What's on the agenda at the Irish Redhead Convention

The Irish Redhead Convention was the brainchild of Joleen and Denis Cronin, a brother and sister with… well, you can probably guess the color of their hair. Since its first edition, the event has enjoyed growing success—no doubt thanks to the variety of activities it offers. Among these are:

  • carrot-throwing contests
  • contests for the best red beards
  • parades
  • courses on redheads in art

This is not an exhaustive list!

Ireland or Scotland?

Conclusion: Does choosing a language study trip to Ireland mean heading to the part of Europe with the most redheads? Think again! According to the BBC, Scotland actually has the highest percentage of natural redheads in the world, at 13%. At 10%, Ireland comes in second place.
