What’s the story behind the curious name “Strawberry Half Marathon”? During your next language trip to Ireland, LEC has the answer!
The start of the Strawberry Half Marathon
Today, Sunday, June 7, marks the start of the 2015 Strawberry Half Marathon, a unique sporting event that every young person heading off on a language study trip to Ireland should know about.
A sporting event in Enniscorthy, in the southeast of the Emerald Isle
The sporting event is taking place in the townof Enniscorthy —or Inis Córthaidh in Irish— the second-most populous town in County Wexford. This county occupies the southeastern tip of the Emerald Isle. Enniscorthy is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Waterford, a city you may have the chance to explore during a future language study trip to Ireland with LEC.
The race for glory… but also for strawberries!
What makes the Enniscorthy Strawberry Half Marathon so special? It’s paired with a unique event: a strawberry festival! Street performances, exhibitions, a market, and music—all set against a backdrop of strawberries and whipped cream: everything you need to make this half marathon both a sporting and a culinary event.
21 kilometers into the heart of Wexford County's second-largest city
Like any self-respecting half marathon, the Strawberry Half Marathon in Enniscorthy challenges participants to cover a distance of approximately 21 kilometers as quickly as possible. The course offers a great opportunity to explore Wexford County’s second-largest town, including St. Aidan’s Cathedral and the River Slaney.
