1976 was a milestone year in the history of the media on the Iberian Peninsula. Why? Because that year saw the foundingof El País, one of the best-known newspapers published in the language of Cervantes. During your language study trip to Spain, LEC takes a closer look at this newspaper, which you’re likely to come across at more than one newsstand during your trip.

A newspaper founded under General Franco

El País was founded under the leadership of Juan Luis Cebrián, who rose through the ranks at Radio Televisión Española during General Franco’s final government and went on to serve as editor-in-chief of the newly created newspaper until 1988. By the 2010s, the daily had a circulation of over 380,000 copies. In Spain, it sells for €1.20 and describes itself as “pro-European.”

Domingo, Babelia, and El Viajero

Today, as you will see for yourself during a language study trip to Spain, El País enjoys great prestige in political and intellectual circles. Its numerous supplements contribute to its excellent reputation: there’s something for everyone, from Domingo (news analysis) to Babelia (literary news), including Propiedades (real estate), not to mention El Viajero (travel and culture, a field that LEC is quite interested in!).
