Because it is one of the most famous cities in a region you may have the chance to explore during a language study trip to the United States with LEC, our organization has decided to take you on a little tour of Topeka… Let’s go!
A city right in the heart of the United States
It’s a real catch-22: choosing between the attractions of the American East Coast and the charms of the West Coast. With Topeka, you can have the best of both worlds! The city is located right in the middle of the United States, in Kansas, a state you may have the chance to explore during an upcoming language study trip to the United States with LEC.
Topeka, the capital of Kansas… but not the most populous city!
In 2013, Topeka had a population of 127,679 (almost as many as the city of Amiens, on this side of the Atlantic). That’s fewer than in Wichita, Kansas’s most populous city. But make no mistake: Topeka is still very much the state capital!
What to see in Topeka during your language study trip to the United States?
Topeka, an administrative and commercial hub, was founded in the second half of the 19th century. From its inception, it experienced significant growth, which was slowed by the Civil War. Today, the hometown of the famous actress Annette Bening is home to a number of attractions that are a source of pride for its residents. Among these are:
- the official commemorative website for Brown v. Board of Education, a 1954 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that made history by declaring racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional
- the Topeka Zoological Park, where bears, eagles, tigers, giraffes, and flamingos live side by side
