Choose a tennis language trip with LEC means choosing to improve your command of the language of Shakespeare while working on your forehand and backhand. But since general knowledge is never far from our minds here at LEC, today we’re talking about a great English-speaking tennis champion: Serena Williams. And the timing couldn’t be better, since the tennis star is celebrating her 34th birthdaytoday, September 26!
A story that begins in the U.S. state of Michigan
Our story begins in Saginaw, a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. On September 26, 1981, a little girl was born. Her name? Serena. A year later, she followed in the footsteps of her older sister, Venus…who was destined for a future as spectacular as her younger sister’s.
A breathtaking list of achievements
Like Venus—whom you’re sure to hear just as much about as her sister during a tennis-themed language study trip —Serena began her career on the courts at a very young age. After countless hours of training and numerous tournaments, her list of achievements is simply incredible— and it’s not over yet.
An amazing Grand Slam run
The right-handed Serena Williams has won nearly 70 singles titles to date, including 21 Grand Slam titles. And so, she emerges victorious:
- 6-timeAustralian Open champion
- 3-time Roland Garros champion
- 6-time Wimbledon champion
- 6-timeUS Open champion
The record-breaking tennis player
In 2012, she won gold at the London Olympics— in singles, but also in doubles with her sister. Serena Williams thus became the only player in history to have won all four Grand Slam titles in both singles and doubles, as well as Olympic gold in both singles and doubles. It’s a status envied by many players… starting with Venus herself!
