There are some British actresses who are often mistaken for Americans: this is the case with the international superstar Kate Winslet. But beware: the reverse is also true! Just ask Anne Hathaway, who is celebrating her 33rd birthday today, November 12, 2015. It’s no surprise, though, when you share the same first and last name as the legendary wife of William Shakespeare…
Anne Hathaway's early days on television
The daughter of a lawyer and an actress, Anne Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 12, 1982. Her first acting role was not on the big screen, but on television: it was 1999, and the young Anne Hathaway appeared in The Green Family (a series that would be called Get Real during her language study trip to the United States). Two years later, her film career began.
A memorable film debut
In 2005, audiences followed her in Brokeback Mountain, directed by Ang Lee. The following year, she starred in one of the most iconic films of her career, The Devil Wears Prada, alongside a spectacularly on-form Meryl Streep.
From Tim Burton to Christopher Nolan
The 2010s marked a period of collaboration for her with several major directors, starting with Tim Burton: the American director cast her in his whimsical adaptation of the classic Alice in Wonderland, alongside Johnny Depp. That same year, Edward Zwick cast her in Love & Other Drugs, until another titan of cinema took her under his wing: Christopher Nolan. The British-American director, producer, and screenwriter cast her in two of his blockbusters:
- The Dark Knight Rises, in which Anne Hathaway plays Catwoman
- Interstellar
Meanwhile, the hyperactive actress even found time to sing a song in the musical drama Les Misérables, directed by Tom Hooper…
