He rarely discusses his private life, shuns photographers, and avoids promotional interviews for his own films. Yet he is one of the most prominent directors on the American continent. Today, November 30, Terrence Malick celebrates his 72nd birthday. This is an opportunity for LEC to look back on his career, as part of your teen language study abroad program in the United States.

Where was Terrence Malick born?

The first mystery surrounding Terrence Malick is his place of birth. In fact, no one can say for certain whether the director was born in Ottawa, Illinois, or in Waco, Texas (two states you might have the chance to explore during a teen language study trip to the United States)! Born into a family of Assyrian immigrants, Terrence Malick excelled in his studies, which took him fromHarvard to Oxford.

"The Wild Walk" and "The Harvest of Heaven"

A Francophile with a passion for philosophy, Terrence Malick demonstrated a unique sensibility and aesthetic within the Hollywood landscape from his very first film, Badlandsin 1974. His second feature film, set in the vast American wilderness, was Days of Heaven, a masterpiece that earned him the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

A return to the big screen after a twenty-year hiatus

For his third film, Terrence Malick kept audiences waiting twenty years —a record in the film industry. The film is The Thin Red Line, a film that follows soldiers during the Pacific War. Fortunately, he didn’t make his fans wait as long for his subsequent films (though…). The rest of his exemplary filmography is as follows:

  • The New World (2005), which reinterprets the legend of John Smith and Pocahontas
  • The Tree of Life (2011), Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival
  • "To the Marvellous" (2012), presented at the 69th Venice Film Festival
  • Knight of Cups (2015), a drama starring Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett
