Choose a language study program in the USA with LEC means giving yourself the chance to explore the entire northeastern region of the United States. States with international prestige await you there, such as New York, Ohio, Connecticut, Pennsylvania… and even West Virginia. Today, our organization invites you to take a closer look at the latter. Let’s take a closer look.

West Virginia, right next to… Virginia

The state known as West Virginia during your language study program in the U.S. is located not far from the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by:

  • Pennsylvania
  • Maryland
  • Kentucky
  • Ohio
  • Virginia

In April 1861, Virginia seceded from its western counties, which were opposed to slavery; it was this secession that gave rise to the two Virginias we know today.

One of the least populous states in the U.S.

West Virginia covers an area of 62,759 km²: by way of comparison, this is roughly halfway between the area of the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region and that of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. In 2014, the state was home to 1.85 million people, ranking it as the 37th most populous state in the country, ahead of Nebraska but behind New Mexico.

Charleston, the capital of West Virginia

In this state, where forests cover three-quarters of the land area, a few cities enjoy national—and even international—renown. This is the case, for example, with Charleston, the capital. Harpers Ferry is also often cited as one of the state’s must-see sites. A historic village in Jefferson County, it continues to attract tourists and history buffs for the key role it played during the Civil War: the famous abolitionist John Brown led a raid there—one that has gone down in history—on the federal arsenal that was then located in the village.
