How do I get a European Health Insurance Card?

For all trips to Europe ( including the United Kingdom, excluding English language programs in France), you must apply to your local health insurance office (CPAM) for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for your child before departure (this card can also be obtained at www.ameli.fr). This individual AND valid card must be presented in order for certain medical expenses to be covered during your child’s language study trip in Europe.

  1. Participants residing in mainland France and covered by the French Social Security system are insured for any medical expenses up to the limits of Social Security coverage and in accordance with its terms and conditions. Any medical expenses not covered by Social Security or, where applicable, by the participant’s personal insurance and/or that of their parents, are the responsibility of the participant and/or their parents.
  2. Participants who do not reside in mainland France or who are not covered by the French Social Security system must ensure, before their departure, that they have adequate health insurance coverage for their stay abroad; if not, they must purchase such insurance on their own.
